Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is a prequel set during an earlier conflict in the series' fictional Strangereal world. You fly as a mercenary pilot known as Cipher, working alongside a wingman through a campaign of missions that include dogfights, ground strikes, high-altitude interceptions and attacks on fortified installations. How you fight is tracked by an ace style system: choosing to engage only hostile targets or to destroy everything in the area shifts your reputation and changes which enemy aces you face and how they behave. Between missions, live-action-styled documentary interviews with surviving pilots comment on your career. Aircraft and special weapons are unlocked as you progress, and flight handling follows the series' accessible arcade model with cockpit and external views.
