Akuji the Heartless is a third-person action game for the PlayStation 1. You play as Akuji, a voodoo warrior who is betrayed and killed, has his heart taken, and is sent into the underworld, where he fights his way through the afterlife seeking revenge and the return of his soul. Play combines melee and ranged combat against undead and demonic enemies with platforming through dark, gothic environments of caverns, temples and ruined structures, including jumping, climbing and hazard avoidance. Akuji collects spells and abilities as he progresses, adding magical attacks to his physical ones, and gathers items scattered through the levels. The presentation leans heavily on horror imagery and a spoken narration from Akuji himself framing his descent.
