Alien Syndrome for the PlayStation Portable is a top-down action game with role-playing elements, carrying the name of Sega's older arcade shooter. You play a soldier sent into infested facilities and planets, moving through levels from an overhead view while shooting swarms of alien creatures. Combat is twin-stick style, with movement and aiming handled separately, and you can switch between firearms and melee attacks. Defeated enemies and containers drop weapons, armour and other equipment, which you fit to your character between and during missions, and experience gained from kills goes into improving your abilities. A support drone accompanies you and can be configured to assist in different ways. Objectives generally involve clearing areas, reaching a target point and dealing with larger boss creatures at the end of a chapter.
