Alter Echo is a third-person action game in which you play Nevin, a technician bonded to a living material called Plast. That bond lets him shift between distinct combat forms on the fly: one built for close-quarters blade work, one for ranged fire, and one geared toward stealth and slowing time to move through hazards and around enemies. Encounters are built around switching forms to suit the situation, chaining attacks and using time manipulation to open up openings. Between fights you travel through stylised, brightly coloured environments, using the shifting abilities to reach new areas and solve movement puzzles. The story is told through cutscenes as Nevin deals with the consequences of the Plast and the figure responsible for its corruption. Play is single-player throughout on the PlayStation 2.
