Area 51 on PlayStation 2 is a first-person shooter set in the secret military base. You play as a member of a hazardous materials unit sent in after an outbreak inside the facility, and the story unfolds through in-game dialogue and audio recordings as you move deeper into the complex. Combat is fought against infected personnel and alien creatures with a mix of conventional firearms and alien weaponry, and you can carry a limited loadout at a time. As the game progresses your character becomes infected himself, which unlocks a mutant form with its own attacks and abilities that you can switch to during fights. Environments range from labs and hangars to underground areas, and multiplayer deathmatch modes are included alongside the single-player campaign.
