Asteroids for the PlayStation 1 is a reworking of Atari's arcade shooter with 3D graphics in place of the original vector display. You control a ship in an enclosed play area filled with drifting rocks, rotating and thrusting to line up shots and breaking large asteroids into smaller pieces while avoiding collisions. Enemy craft appear to add pressure, and the momentum-based handling of the arcade game is retained, so slowing down takes as much thought as speeding up. Rather than one endless field, play is divided into a series of stages with varying backdrops and hazards, and pickups grant weapon and defensive upgrades as you clear debris. Scoring and survival remain the focus, with difficulty rising as more objects crowd the screen.
