Baroque is a dungeon-crawling role-playing game set in a bleak, surreal world after a catastrophe. You descend through the Neuro Tower, a structure whose layout is generated anew for each attempt, fighting distorted creatures and gathering items whose effects are often unknown until used. Death is part of the structure: when you fall you return to the surface having lost most of what you carried, and you begin another descent, gradually piecing together what happened to the world and to your own character. Story information comes from cryptic conversations with the figures who remain outside the tower. Combat and exploration play out in real time, and the atmosphere is grim and unsettling rather than heroic. This PlayStation 2 version is a reworking of an earlier release of the game.
