Battle Arena Toshinden is a one-on-one fighting game with polygonal characters, and nearly the entire cast fights with a weapon: swords, whips, staves and similar arms give the matches longer reach than a typical hand-to-hand fighter. Alongside the usual attacks and throws, each character has special moves and a powerful desperation attack that becomes available when health runs low. The arenas are ring-shaped with boundaries, and a sidestep button lets you move into the background or foreground to dodge attacks and reposition rather than only advancing and retreating along a single line. Modes include single-player play through the roster and two-player versus matches. The fighters each have their own theme music, ending sequence and stylised anime-influenced design.
