Cars for PlayStation 2 adapts the Pixar film into a racing game centred on Lightning McQueen. Radiator Springs and the surrounding countryside form a drivable open hub, and you travel between characters to trigger races, time trials and mini-games instead of selecting them all from menus. Events range from Piston Cup circuit races to dirt roads, canyon highways and off-road challenges, along with side activities such as tractor tipping. Drifting and driving on two wheels build a boost meter you spend on straights, so sliding through corners is part of normal racing. Characters from the film appear as opponents, race givers and unlockable drivers, with voice work and cutscenes tying the events to the movie's story. Progress unlocks new areas, racers and paint jobs, and two players can race in split screen.
