A PlayStation 2 action game set early in the series' timeline, with Leon Belmont entering a castle to rescue a woman taken from him. Play is fully 3D: you explore connected wings of the castle from a behind-the-back camera, fighting groups of enemies with a whip that can be swung in combos, aimed at range, and infused with elemental orbs that change its properties. Sub-weapons such as the axe and holy water return, powered by hearts, and can be paired with orbs for alternate effects. Rooms are entered one at a time through doors, with maps, save points and item shops between them. Bosses guard sections of the castle, and defeating them yields relics that expand what you can reach.
