Colin McRae Rally is a rally driving game for the PlayStation built around point-to-point special stages rather than circuit racing. You drive one car at a time against the clock on gravel, tarmac, snow and dirt surfaces, listening to a co-driver call out upcoming corners, crests and hazards. Getting the pace notes right matters, because stages are narrow, lined with trees and banks, and easy to leave at speed. Damage carries between stages, and you get limited time in service areas to repair components such as suspension, steering and bodywork, so choosing what to fix becomes part of the strategy. Handling differs noticeably by surface, rewarding weight transfer and handbrake use on loose ground. Modes include championship play, individual stages and time trials.
