Contra: Legacy of War moves the run-and-gun series into 3D, presenting its action from an overhead viewpoint that can be rotated as you play. You pick from a small cast of commandos and fight through stages filled with soldiers, alien creatures and machinery, collecting weapon power-ups that change your firepower and dodging incoming fire from multiple directions. Levels build toward large boss enemies with set attack patterns, in keeping with the series' structure. Two players can play cooperatively. The game includes an anaglyph 3D display mode intended to be viewed with red-and-blue glasses, which alters the visuals rather than the gameplay. Environments range from jungle and industrial areas to alien locations, and the shifting camera angle is central to how you read enemy positions.
