Crimson Tears is an action game for the PlayStation 2 in which you control one of three artificial humans fighting through a near-future Japanese city overrun by hostile machines and creatures. Combat is real-time and melee-focused, with combo strings, throws and weapon-specific movesets, and each of the three playable characters favours a different style of fighting. Levels are laid out as multi-floor dungeons whose layouts change between runs, so you descend through randomised rooms collecting weapons, items and materials while managing durability and inventory space. Returning to your base lets you save, restock and prepare for the next descent. The game uses cel-shaded, anime-influenced visuals and tells its story through cutscenes between expeditions. Structurally it blends brawler combat with the risk-and-return loop of a dungeon crawler.
