Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an action role-playing game for the PlayStation Portable that follows Zack Fair, a SOLDIER operative working for the Shinra corporation, in a story set before the events of Final Fantasy VII. Combat happens in real time, with Zack attacking, blocking and dodging while selecting Materia-based magic and abilities from a command list on a cooldown timer. Alongside this runs the Digital Mind Wave, a slot reel that spins during battle and can trigger limit attacks, summons, temporary buffs and level increases. You strengthen Zack by fusing Materia together to create new spells and stat boosts, and a large set of optional side missions offers short combat encounters with item rewards. The story is presented with voice acting and cinematic cutscenes, and features characters familiar from Final Fantasy VII.
