Devil May Cry 3 is a PlayStation 2 action game set earlier in the series' timeline, following a younger Dante and his conflict with his brother Vergil around a demonic tower. The main addition is the style system: you choose a combat style such as one focused on evasion, guarding, melee tricks or gunplay, and each levels up separately as you use it, changing how Dante moves and fights. You can also swap between multiple melee weapons and firearms mid-combo, which makes for long, freeform chains against groups of demons. Missions run through the tower's halls, courtyards and caverns, punctuated by frequent boss fights with distinct patterns. Red orbs buy items and upgrades between missions, and the difficulty is demanding, with additional modes and rankings for repeat playthroughs.
