Dragon Ball Z: Budokai is a 3D fighting game for the PlayStation 2 based on the Dragon Ball Z anime. Fights take place in arenas where two characters trade melee combos, blocks and throws, fire energy blasts at range, and fly or dash around one another. A ki gauge fuels special attacks and transformations, so characters like Goku and Vegeta can shift into more powerful forms mid-match. Story mode retells arcs from the series with cutscenes using the game's engine, while other modes cover single battles, tournament play against the CPU, and two-player versus matches. Capsules earned through play are used to customise fighters' move sets and abilities before a match. The roster is drawn from the series' heroes and villains, with more characters unlocked as you complete story content.
