Driver casts you as Tanner, an undercover police driver taking jobs for criminal organisations in large American cities. Almost all of the game is played from inside a car, with missions asking you to tail targets, transport passengers, deliver vehicles by a deadline, or escape police pursuit within a time limit. Cars handle in a heavy, tail-happy 1970s style, and the physics support handbrake turns, powerslides and long airborne jumps over hills. Damage accumulates on your vehicle, and running out of time or destroying the car fails the mission. Alongside the story missions there are free-drive and pursuit modes, plus a director feature that lets you replay a run and edit camera angles into a chase sequence. An opening test in a parking garage teaches the manoeuvres you will need.
