Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future takes the series into full 3D. You control a dolphin swimming through open underwater environments, with free movement in all directions, plus jumps and aerial tricks above the surface. Sonar returns as a core tool, used to scan surroundings, interact with creatures and objects, and attack. Missions are given as objectives within each area, ranging from navigating hazards and mazes to guiding or protecting other sea life, and story sequences frame the events across the game's chapters. Air management continues to shape how you explore, since you must surface regularly. The game leans on large, open water spaces, ambient music and long sightlines, and the swimming controls take some adjustment before precise navigation becomes comfortable.
