Extermination is a third-person survival horror game for the PlayStation 2. You play as a member of a military team sent to investigate a research base in Antarctica after contact is lost, and find the facility overrun by mutated creatures. Exploration is built around locked areas and backtracking as you find the means to open new routes through the complex. Your rifle accepts attachments that change how it functions, letting you swap in different firing modes as you progress. Contact with enemies and hazards raises an infection gauge, and letting it climb drains your health until you treat it with a vaccine at a recovery point. Between fights you manage supplies, save at fixed terminals, and piece together what happened to the base from what you find along the way.
