Fatal Frame III: The Tormented centres on Rei Kurosawa, a photographer grieving her fiancé, who begins dreaming of a snow-covered manor and finds the dreams following her into waking life. The game alternates between her house, where you read documents, use a computer and prepare for the next night, and the manor itself, explored in the series' usual mix of fixed rooms, puzzles and spirit encounters. The Camera Obscura returns as your weapon: you frame ghosts through a viewfinder, time shots for stronger hits, and upgrade the camera with points earned from your photographs. Film is limited and comes in different grades. Two additional characters become playable across the story, each with their own routes through the manor, and tattoo marks on Rei's body track how far the haunting has progressed.
