Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix is a prequel to Fear Effect, telling how Hana, Glas and Deke came together and introducing Rain to the group. It keeps the series' presentation of cel-shaded characters moving across animated pre-rendered backdrops, with fixed camera angles and a cinematic, comic-styled look. You alternate between characters as the story shifts location, using stealth, gunfights and puzzle solving to progress. The fear meter returns in place of standard health, rising as you take risks and falling when you stay out of trouble, and running out triggers one of the game's death sequences. Puzzles range from environmental switches to sequences that require you to control two characters in different areas. The plot mixes near-future crime fiction with mythological elements as it develops.
