A turn-based role-playing game for the original PlayStation with a deliberately storybook, medieval-fantasy tone. You play as Zidane, a member of a theater troupe that doubles as a band of thieves, whose kidnapping of Princess Garnet pulls him into a war between kingdoms. The party includes the black mage Vivi and the knight Steiner among others, with four characters fighting at a time and each locked to a role. Abilities are learned by equipping weapons, armor and accessories and earning points in battle, after which they can be kept permanently. Trance builds during combat and temporarily upgrades a character's commands. Side content includes the Tetra Master card game, chocobo treasure hunting and optional bosses, and Active Time Events show scenes involving characters elsewhere.
