Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII is a third-person shooter for the PlayStation 2 set after the events of Final Fantasy VII. You play as Vincent Valentine, using firearms that can be customized with interchangeable barrels, scopes, and other parts purchased or found between missions. Combat mixes gunplay with melee strikes and Vincent's ability to transform into a more powerful form for a limited time. Stages are structured as discrete missions, and performance is scored, with results feeding into upgrade currency and experience. The story concerns a paramilitary group called Deepground and draws on Vincent's past, told through cutscenes that expand on his connection to Shinra's experiments. Familiar locations and characters from Final Fantasy VII appear across the campaign, which is narrative-heavy compared with most action games of the era.
