Freedom Fighters is a third-person shooter for the PlayStation 2 set in an alternate history where Soviet forces have invaded and occupied the United States. You play Chris Stone, a New York plumber who is drawn into the resistance and gradually becomes one of its leaders. Levels take place across occupied city blocks, rooftops and interiors, with objectives such as destroying supply points, freeing captured fighters and taking control of contested areas. The distinctive element is squad recruitment: as you complete objectives your charisma grows, letting you gather more rebels to follow you, and simple contextual commands send them to attack a position, defend a spot or regroup. Maps are often built as connected areas you can approach from several directions. A split-screen multiplayer mode is included alongside the campaign.
