Galaga Destination Earth is a shooter that builds on the arcade Galaga formula for the PlayStation. Alongside familiar fixed-screen waves of insect-like alien fighters that swoop down in formation, the game mixes in other mission types and viewpoints, including scrolling sections and stages set over planetary surfaces. Your ship collects power-ups and upgraded weapons, and the series' capture mechanic returns, where an enemy can tow your fighter away and you can win it back for dual firepower. Boss encounters cap off stages, and the presentation uses polygonal ships and backgrounds while keeping the action largely on a flat plane. Play is single-player and score-driven, with the emphasis on learning attack patterns and clearing formations quickly rather than on exploration.
