The original Grand Theft Auto is an open-ended crime game played from a top-down perspective, with the camera looking straight down on the streets as you drive and walk through them. You take on jobs by answering payphones, then carry out thefts, deliveries, hits and getaways to build up a cash score high enough to move on. Almost any vehicle on the road can be stolen and driven, and each one handles differently. Police response escalates with the trouble you cause, forcing you to ditch cars, repaint them or outrun pursuit. Radio stations play while you drive, and the game moves between several distinct city environments, each with its own layout of streets, bridges and hideouts to learn.
