A single-player action RPG that casts you as Kite, a new player in a fictional online game called The World. After a friend collapses during a session, you begin investigating strange data and corrupted areas hidden inside the game. Play alternates between hub towns, where you shop, read message boards and answer email, and field areas you reach by entering three keywords that generate the dungeon and its conditions. Battles are fought in real time with a party of three, using melee attacks, spells and items, and you can give your AI partners orders during combat. Characters gain levels and equipment as you go, and your save data can be carried forward into the following volumes of the story.
