The second volume in the .hack series continues Kite's investigation inside the fictional online game The World, picking up after the events of the first game. Structure remains the same: you visit town servers to trade, accept quests and read in-game email and forums, then use three-word keyword combinations to generate field and dungeon areas. Combat is real-time with a three-character party, mixing weapon attacks, skills and support magic, and you can direct your AI companions with commands. New party members join the roster and additional areas and servers open up as the story advances. Save data from the previous volume can be imported so that levels, equipment and items carry over rather than starting from scratch.
