The third volume of the .hack series follows Kite deeper into the mysteries of The World, the fictional online game at the centre of the story. As in earlier entries, you move between town servers for shopping, quests, message boards and email, and generate dungeons by entering three keywords at the Chaos Gate. Fighting is real-time with a party of three, combining physical attacks, skills, items and magic, with commands you can issue to AI allies. More areas, enemies and party members become available as the plot progresses, and equipment and character growth continue from where the previous game left off if you import your save. The story is told through cutscenes and in-game correspondence between sessions.
