Lumines is a puzzle game for the PlayStation Portable built around falling two-by-two blocks made up of light and dark squares. You rotate and place them to form squares of a single colour, which are then cleared by a vertical timeline that sweeps continuously across the field in time with the music. Because clearing only happens as the line passes, timing your placements to chain multiple squares in one sweep is central to scoring well. The presentation ties visuals and audio together through skins, each with its own soundtrack, background art and block designs, which change as you progress through a session. Modes include the main endless challenge plus alternative and versus options. Play is designed around short sessions on a handheld, with escalating speed as the skins advance.
