Metal Gear Solid brings Konami's stealth series to 3D on the PlayStation. You play as Solid Snake, sent alone into a snowbound nuclear disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island after a special forces unit seizes it and takes hostages. Guards patrol with visible vision cones on a radar display, and the emphasis is on avoiding detection: hiding behind cover, crawling through vents, knocking on walls to lure enemies and slipping past cameras. Getting spotted triggers an alert phase you must escape before you can move freely again. Between areas you contact support characters by Codec for briefing, advice and conversation. The campaign is heavily story-driven, with extensive voice acting, cutscenes and a series of one-on-one boss fights against members of the enemy unit, each requiring a different tactic. Weapons and gadgets are gathered as you explore.
