MLB 2001 is a PlayStation baseball game using licensed Major League Baseball teams, players and ballparks. You handle hitting through swing timing and aim, pitching through pitch selection and placement, and fielding by controlling defenders directly for throws and tags. Modes cover single exhibition games as well as longer play where you follow a team through a schedule and track accumulating statistics, along with side contests built around home run hitting. Commentary, replays and crowd noise fill out the presentation between pitches, and difficulty settings adjust how demanding the batting and pitching are. Rosters reflect major league lineups of the period the game was released. Like other late-era PlayStation sports titles, it uses polygonal players and stadium models with menu-driven team and roster management, and it plays as a simulation rather than an arcade take on baseball.
