Monster Rancher is a monster-raising simulation for the PlayStation. You run a ranch, and rather than choosing your creatures from a menu, you generate them by having the game read a CD: swapping in music discs or other game discs produces different monsters, which is a core part of the appeal. Once a monster hatches, you manage its life week by week, assigning training drills to build stats such as power, speed and intelligence, feeding it, resting it and deciding when to scold or praise it. Prepared monsters enter tournaments, where battles play out using a stamina meter and a set of close- and long-range attacks. Monsters age, peak and eventually retire, so raising a strong fighter means balancing hard training against fatigue and lifespan.
