Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an action adventure set in the Mortal Kombat universe rather than a traditional fighting game. You play as Liu Kang or Kung Lao, moving through connected 3D environments and fighting groups of enemies with combo strings, grabs, juggles and character-specific special moves. Defeating enemies earns experience that you spend on new attacks and abilities, some of which also open up previously inaccessible paths for exploration and backtracking. Fatalities can be performed on weakened enemies during regular combat, and environmental hazards from the series appear as ways to finish opponents. The story follows events tied to the early games in the series, with boss battles against familiar characters. Two players can play through the campaign together in cooperative mode on one screen, with unlockable extras available alongside the main game.
