SaGa Frontier is a Square role-playing game for the PlayStation built around separate scenarios rather than one continuous story. You choose from a cast of protagonists, each with their own starting region, supporting characters and reasons for travelling, and the game's science-fantasy setting links a number of distinct worlds you can move between. Progress is largely free-form: instead of a single fixed path, you decide which places to visit and which leads to follow, and many scenarios can be finished in different orders. Battles are turn-based and use techniques learned in combat, with characters sometimes discovering new abilities mid-fight. Human, mystic, monster and mech party members grow in different ways, so party composition affects how you build power. Visuals combine sprite characters with pre-rendered backgrounds and animated attack effects.
