Shadow the Hedgehog puts Sonic's rival in his own 3D action platformer on PlayStation 2. Shadow has lost his memory and is trying to find out what he is, and the story pulls in characters from across the Sonic series as well as an alien invasion and a military organisation. Levels are built for speed, with running, jumping, homing attacks and rail grinding, but Shadow can also pick up guns dropped by enemies and take control of vehicles. Every stage offers multiple objectives, typically one heroic and one destructive, alongside the plain option of reaching the goal. The objective you complete decides which level you go to next, so playthroughs branch into different paths and different endings, encouraging repeat runs to see the other outcomes. Cutscenes with voice acting tie the chapters together.
