You play Henry Townshend, a man who wakes to find the door of his apartment chained shut from the inside. Holes that appear in the apartment lead to other locations, including a subway, a forest and a prison, and you move back and forth between these worlds and Room 302. The apartment is viewed in first person and acts as a hub where you can save, rest and store items in a chest, since your carrying capacity is limited. Combat uses melee weapons and a small number of firearms, with an emphasis on weak, evasive enemies and ghosts that cannot be permanently killed. Later sections involve escorting another character, whose condition affects how events unfold. Multiple endings are possible.
