Sonic Rivals 2 is a side-scrolling racing platformer for the PlayStation Portable and a follow-up to the first Rivals game. You again race a rival character through the same 2.5D stage, using loops, rails and springs to build speed while attacking and obstructing your opponent, with item cards providing temporary powers. This entry organises the roster into pairs for its story mode, adding characters such as Espio and Metal Sonic alongside returning racers, and expands the mode list beyond straight races with objective-based contests such as collecting rings or capturing targets. Boss battles punctuate the stages. Two players can compete wirelessly, and the game includes options for customising a character's appearance with unlockable items.
