Test Drive 5 continues the series' arcade approach to street racing on the PlayStation. You drive licensed production cars, including muscle-era models alongside modern sports cars, on routes that run through city streets, tunnels and open country. Traffic shares the road and police vehicles pursue you, so races involve dodging obstacles as much as outpacing rivals. Handling is loose and speed-focused, with drifting through corners a normal part of getting around the course. Alongside standard races, the game includes a pursuit mode in which you drive a police car and try to stop offenders. Split-screen play supports a second driver. Full-motion video segments and a licensed rock soundtrack accompany the action, and additional cars and tracks unlock through play.
