The Suffering is a third-person horror action game for PlayStation 2. You play as Torque, a prisoner sent to a penitentiary on Carnate Island who wakes after an earthquake to find the place overrun by grotesque creatures tied to the island's history of executions and violence. Play combines gunfights and melee combat with exploration of cell blocks, tunnels and outdoor areas, scavenging ammunition, health items and flashlight batteries as you go. Torque can transform into a monstrous form for a limited time, trading control for raw power. Your treatment of the survivors you meet shifts the game's morality track, affecting story scenes and which ending you reach. Torque's past is left ambiguous, with flashbacks and hallucinations filling in what happened to his family.
