The Tale of Despereaux is a PlayStation 2 game based on the animated film adaptation of the children's novel. You play as Despereaux, a small mouse with unusually large ears and a taste for adventure, making his way through the castle, dungeons and other locations from the story. Play is built around platforming: running, jumping and climbing through stages while avoiding hazards, dealing with rats and other threats, and collecting items scattered along the route. Puzzle sections and simple objectives break up the traversal, and cutscenes carry the plot between levels. The presentation follows the film's characters and storybook setting, and the controls and difficulty are aimed at younger players working through a straightforward, level-based adventure.
