Thunder Force V is a horizontally scrolling shooter for the PlayStation, continuing the Thunder Force series. You fly a craft through side-scrolling stages built with 3D-rendered graphics and scaling effects, fighting waves of enemies and large bosses. The ship carries several weapons that you switch between at will, including forward, spread and rear-firing options, and additional weapon types are collected during play. A CRAW-style shield option can absorb hits and add firepower, and ship speed can be adjusted to handle tight sections. Stages move through varied settings and end in boss fights that require learning attack patterns. The game keeps the series' emphasis on weapon selection and positioning rather than bullet-sponge tactics, and it is accompanied by a synth-driven rock soundtrack in the series tradition.
