TimeSplitters is a first-person shooter for the PlayStation 2 in which each mission is set in a different decade, moving across past, present and future time periods. The story mode sends you into a location to retrieve a specific item and escape, with enemies spawning as you move, and missions can be played at different difficulty levels that change the objectives. Beyond the campaign, the game centres on arcade-style multiplayer with split-screen play and computer-controlled bots, using a large roster of unlockable characters drawn from the various eras. A map maker lets you build your own levels from tile sets and place enemies and items within them. Controls and pacing follow the fast, run-and-gun style rather than realistic military simulation.
