Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam on PlayStation 2 shifts the series toward racing rather than open-ended park skating. Courses run downhill, and you compete against other skaters over routes that branch into alternate paths and shortcuts. Tricks and grinds still matter, feeding boost and speed that help you stay ahead, and races are mixed with score-based and objective-driven events. You progress through a career of competitions in a range of environments, unlocking skaters, boards and gear as you place well. Character stats can be improved over time, and the roster includes Tony Hawk alongside other skaters. Multiplayer options let you race head to head. The emphasis throughout is on momentum, route choice and reacting to obstacles and other racers, rather than on free-roaming exploration of level geometry.
