Tony Hawk's Underground on PlayStation 2 puts a created skater at the centre of a story mode, starting out in New Jersey and working toward a professional career. Rather than a pure goal list, progression follows a narrative with missions given by characters you meet in each area. You can step off the board and walk, climb and jump to reach places the skateboard alone cannot, and some sections involve driving vehicles. Standard combo play remains, chaining grinds, manuals, flip tricks and airs for points. Extensive customisation covers your skater's appearance, tricks and gear, and level editing tools let you build your own areas. Licensed professional skaters appear throughout the story and as playable characters, and local multiplayer modes are included alongside the single-player campaign.
