Vagrant Story is a single-player action role-playing game for the PlayStation. You control Ashley Riot, an agent sent to investigate events surrounding the ruined city of Le\u00e1 Monde, and explore its dungeons, catacombs, streets and towers from a behind-the-character camera. Combat pauses the action when you strike, letting you target specific body parts and chain follow-up attacks through timed button presses, with defensive chains available when you are hit. A Risk meter rises as you attack, increasing damage taken and reducing accuracy, so pacing matters. Weapons and armour are built and refined at workshops, combining materials and blades to adjust damage types and affinities against different enemy classes. Between combat, block-pushing and platforming puzzles gate progress through the city. The story is told through cinematic scenes and text presented in a stylised script.
