Vampire Hunter D is a survival horror style adventure based on the vampire-hunting character of the same name. You control D as he investigates a castle and its surroundings, moving through pre-rendered backgrounds viewed from fixed camera angles. Combat is handled at close range with D's sword, and you manage healing items and limited resources as you explore. Progress comes from searching rooms for keys and documents, solving item-based puzzles and unlocking new areas of the estate, punctuated by encounters with vampires and other creatures. D's parasitic left hand serves as a talking companion and offers commentary and assistance during the journey. The presentation leans on cutscenes and dialogue to tell the story, with a gothic setting of corridors, crypts and grounds to work through.
