Vandal Hearts is a tactical role-playing game played on isometric grid-based maps. Battles alternate between your turn and the enemy's, and you move each unit across terrain of varying height, positioning carefully so that attacks from the side or rear land harder and elevation works in your favor. Character classes form a rock-paper-scissors relationship, with soldiers, archers, mages and mounted units each strong against certain opponents, and units promote into stronger classes as they gain experience. The story follows a young officer caught up in political intrigue, corruption and war, told through dialogue scenes between missions. Maps often include specific objectives and scripted events rather than simple elimination. The presentation is known for its stylized battle animations, including the exaggerated arcs of blood that follow a killing blow.
