Virtua Fighter 4 is a 3D fighting game for PlayStation 2, adapted from Sega's arcade release. Fights are one-on-one in enclosed or open arenas, with ring-outs, throws, counters and wall-based combos all playing a part. The three-button punch, kick and guard scheme returns, with the emphasis on spacing, frame timing and knowing when to attack or defend. The roster includes the established Virtua Fighter cast alongside Lei-Fei, who fights with Shaolin stance changes, and Vanessa Lewis, who switches between offensive and defensive stances. The home version puts a lot of weight on solo play: Kumite mode has you fighting a long series of AI opponents to build a ranking, and a detailed training suite breaks down command lists and drills. Versus play for two players is included.
