Wild 9 is a side-scrolling action platformer for the PlayStation. You play as Wex, a young hero armed with a device called the Rig, a tractor-beam style weapon that grabs enemies and objects at a distance. Rather than simply shooting foes, you pull them in and then drag them into the hazards built into each stage, feeding them to grinders, spikes, crushers and drops. Levels are built as 2D paths through industrial and alien environments rendered with 3D graphics, and mix combat with jumping, climbing and vehicle sections. Enemies must often be handled in specific ways using the terrain, so encounters work partly as short physical puzzles. The tone is dark and cartoonish, with exaggerated violence played for effect.
